Helping Loved Ones

If someone close to you has experienced sexual violence, you might be feeling overwhelmed and wonder how best to support them.

By far the best thing you can do is talk to them.

When you do, there are some really simple things you can do to help:

  • Believe them.
  • Try not to ask lots of questions – focus on what they want to tell you.
  • Don’t judge – there’s no ‘normal’ way to respond to sexual violence.
  • Ask what they need from you.
  • Don’t jump in and try to take control.

If your partner has experienced sexual violence, you might have some questions about how to be sensitive and considerate in your sexual relationship. The most important thing is to talk to your partner! Ask what they need from you and understand that their needs may change over time.

It’s difficult to find out that someone you care for has experienced sexual violence. We’re here to help you cope too.
